Warsaw, October 22 - Neftegaz.RU. Poland’s state-owned energy supplier PGNiG has filed its position within the certification procedure of Nord Stream 2 operator to Germany´s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie – BMWi).

According to Poland, the Nord Stream 2 firm does not meet the substantive conditions for certification in the preferential model of Independent Transmission Operator (ITO).

Assessment of impact on security of energy supplies in the EU is one of the components of the certification procedure.
This assessment is being conducted by the German BMWi, which is obliged to present its opinion by December 8, 2021.

PGNiG CEO Paweł Majewski said:
  • Current situation on the European Union gas market proves the scale of the risks for security of supplies created by Nord Stream 2 project
  • Suggestions that additional gas supplies are possible only through Nord Stream 2 are the manifestation of pressure on the certification procedure and prove that the project is aimed at bypassing the traditional transit routes
  • Since there are spare capacities of the existing pipelines, there is no need for Nord Stream 2 to increase gas supplies to the EU Member States
Mateusz Morawiecki, Poland´s prime minister, called the pipeline «a strategic mistake» and said that rising gas prices are evidence of this.
He has previously called Nord Stream 2 «a new hybrid weapon» aimed at the European Union and NATO.
Morawiecki warned:
  • Giving additional instruments of price blackmail to President Putin increases the possibility of exerting pressure on Europe
Russia is the biggest supplier to Europe, accounting for more than 40% of all EU gas.
Last week, Vladimir Putin denied charges that Russia is using its gas sales as a geopolitical weapon and is fulfilling all of its obligations to Europe in gas deliveries.

He said that Gazprom had already increased supplies to Europe by 11 bln m3 this year.
Russian President noted that Russia can quickly boost gas supplies to Europe via the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as soon as it gets the green light from Germany.
