Urengoy OTPD Held Emergency Response Drills to Check Readiness for Oil Spill Containment in Zapolyarie – Purpe Oil Pipeline

Transneft Siberia held emergency response drills in Zapolyarie – Purpe oil trunk pipeline in Pur District, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.

As it was announced by the company on June 27, 2016, the drills were intended to check readiness and train personnel actions for containment of the emergency oil spills to water surfaces in summer.

Business units of the Central Maintenance Department (CMD) of Urengoy Oil Trunk Pipeline Department (OTPD) were among the event participants. The total of 18 employees and 8 equipment units were involved in the drills.

According to the drills scenario, emergency pressure drop below permitted level was recorded in the area of the Yagenetta River underwater crossing of Zapolyarie – Purpe oil trunk pipeline at 9:00 a.m., local time.

The dispatcher service of Urengoy Department notified the dispatcher of Tyumen-based territorial control center, heads of OTPD business units, the security service, the fire-fighting unit.

The patrol crew of Urengoy OTPD CMD was sent to the simulated accident site to determine the oil spill point, to specify the nature and scope of damage. The body of OTPD emergency operation services arrived to contain the “spill”.

The river is 50 meters wide and 2.3 meters deep in the “spill” containment site. To enable 100% spill containment, 100 meters of booms were installed; oil skimmers and sorbents were used. The simulated spill was contained at 3:10 p.m. Absence of pollutants beyond the booms was confirmed by the Environmental Safety and Rational Nature Management Department of Urengoy OTPD.

Business units of Urengoy Oil Trunk Pipeline Department met the challenge and showed correct actions and readiness to emergencies, according to Demis Nemykin, leader of the emergency response drill, Head of the Urengoy OTPD CMD.
