Kazakhstan's Tengiz oil field reports over 2,000 COVID-19 cases

Nur-Sultan, July 13 - Neftegaz.RU. The Tengiz oil field, one of the largest in Kazakhstan, has reported 2 160 coronavirus cases, Kazakh local media reported on July 12.

According to the reports, infections were registered in 36 shift camps and 57 companies operating at the field.

The Tengiz oil field in west Kazakhstan's Atyrau Region produced nearly 30 million tons of crude oil in 2019. It is owned and operated by Tengizchevroil, with U.S. oil giant Chevron Corporation holding a 50 percent stake.

The earliest cases occurred at a workers camp at the oil field on April 8. About 770 workers contracted the virus in May, while new infections hit over 700 in June. So far in July, over 400 new cases were reported.

The Atyrau Region has reported 7,662 COVID-19 cases, becoming the hardest-hit region in Kazakhstan. Nationwide, the Central Asian country has so far registered over 58,253 confirmed cases and 264 deaths as of July 12.
