Belarus expects $70 million in compensation for tainted Russian oil

Belarus expects $70 million in compensation for tainted Russian oil

Minsk, December 10 - Neftegz.RU. Belarus expects to receive some $70 million in compensation for the delivery of tainted oil from Russia, Belarus' Ambassador to Russia Vladimir Semashko told the media as he commented on the meeting of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin on 7 December, BelTA has learned.

According to Vladimir Semashko, the compensation issue was touched upon at the talks between the two heads of state. “It seemed to me that on 6 December [at the meeting of the prime ministers] this issue was resolved and the Russian premier agreed that the matter can be addressed the same as, for example, the Hungarian company MOL regulated the matter with Transneft: $15 in compensation for each barrel of dirty oil. This would suit us as well. It all, however, sounded differently on Saturday,” Vladimir Semashko said.

The ambassador is confident that the issue is resolvable. “Belneftekhim and our oil refineries just need to work on the matter. We need to do it officially, as it is required by law, and set out our claims. Approaches can be different, but if Hungary or Poland and Germany did so, we should do the same. We are talking about a considerable amount of money, some $70 million of compensation,” said Vladimir Semashko.

“Another approach is possible: both refineries were forced to reduce their workload and suffered financial losses. They can be calculated. [Chairman of Belneftekhim Andrei] Rybakov is expected to come with the verified documents next week,” the ambassador said.
