Germany signed energy partnership agreement with Qatar in race to ditch Russian gas

Berlin, May 23 - Neftegaz.RU. The partnership was signed while Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Al Thani was visiting Berlin to meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other officials.

Germany aims to diversify its gas supply with the help of LNG in order to foster energy security during the transition period towards carbon neutrality.

The energy partnership between Qatar and Germany will support high-level intergovernmental dialogue on energy-related topics.
The 2 sides said they are progressing on a roadmap for the energy partnership outlining the structure and actions of the cooperation, including the formation of 2 working groups.

1stly, the Working Group on LNG and hydrogen will support the development of LNG and hydrogen trade relations between Qatar and Germany.
It will also provide a forum for discussion around questions regarding necessary infrastructure and regulatory affairs.

2ndly, the Working Group on renewables, energy efficiency and demand-side management will focus on the expansion of renewable energy capacities including related topics such as infrastructure and electricity markets.
It will also facilitate the exchange on energy efficiency solutions that contribute to the decarbonisation of the transport, and industrial sectors.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the Gulf state, one of the world’s biggest LNG exporters, would play a central role in Germany’s strategy to diversify away from Russian imports.

Germany, which has committed to ending Russian gas imports by 2024, has plans for as many as 4 LNG terminals with a combined regasification capacity of 22.2 bln m3/year.
