Rosneft joins ‘Methane guiding principles’ round table

Rosneft joins ‘Methane guiding principles’ round table

Moscow, March 5 - Neftegaz.RU. Eric Liron, Rosneft’s Vice President for In-House Services, joined the annual round-table meeting of members of the international initiative the Methane Guiding Principles. The meeting of executives from more than 20 signatory oil and gas companies was held in London.

The Methane Guiding Principles is a voluntary, international multi-stakeholder partnership of oil and gas industry signatories, which. Rosneft joined in June 2019. All signatory companies (among them BP, Eni, ExxonMobil, Shell, Equinor, etc.) are actively engaged in reducing emissions of methane, which is one of the 2 key greenhouse gases in the oil and gas sector, along with carbon dioxide.

This meeting agreed the priorities and work plan for 2020 and discussed the most effective use of learning materials already developed. The parties agreed that the 8 ‘Reducing methane Emissions Best Practice Guides’, which were produced in 2019, will be rolled out to operational staff across member companies. Rosneft has committed to translate all guides into Russian to be used by companies operating in Russia.

Another key priority agreed by members was to develop and conduct training courses for executives, operational managers and operational staff to improve the understanding of methane management, emission sources and reduction strategies, as well as methodologies for detection, quantification and reporting.

In accordance with the current Rosneft 2022 Strategy, the Company intends to take a leading position in terms of environmental responsibility of its business and enter the first quartile of international companies in terms of unit greenhouse gas emissions. In 2018, Rosneft cut its greenhouse gases emission in refining by 11% year-on-year. At the same time, the Company reduced methane emissions by 46%.
