Russian gas transit through Ukraine increased by 4% in May

After the launch of the Turkish Stream, transit to Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria was fully switched to new gas pipelines, reducing transit through Ukraine

Russian gas transit through Ukraine increased by 4% in May

Kiev, June 8 - Neftegaz.RU. In May 2021, the transit of Russian gas to European countries through the Ukrainian gas transmission system (GTS) amounted to 3.85 billion m3, which is almost 4% more than in April.
This was reported by the press service of Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU).

Last month, the Ukrainian GTS Operator transported:
  • 0.344 billion m3 of gas to Poland
  • 2.5 billion m3 to Slovakia
  • 0.803 billion m3 to Hungary
  • 0.189 billion m3 to Moldova
The volume of gas transported from the EU to Ukraine in May amounted to 8 million m3.
As Ukrinform reported, in January-April 2021, gas transit volumes through the Ukrainian GTS decreased by 10%, to 14.1 billion m3 compared to the same period last year.

CEO of GTSOU Serhiy Makogon recalled in April that Russia's Gazprom is gradually reducing the volumes of gas transit via Ukraine.
Thus, following the launch of Turkish Stream 1 and 2, Ukraine's GTS has lost all positions in transmitting gas to Turkey, Greece, and Bulgaria.

Makogon said that if the extension of Turkish Stream through Bulgaria and Serbia is completed, Gazprom will transfer gas transit to Hungary, also via TurkStream 2.
For Ukraine, this means extra losses of 10-12 billion m3 in transit annually.
