Baltic states need to re-analyze the need for alternative energy sources alongside gas and
nuclear energy, which is one of the most autonomous, secure and cleanest energies in the world, Latvian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Artis Pabriks said, Baltic Times has reported.
Pabriks on Monday met with representatives of the gas transmission system operator Conexus Baltic Grid (
Conexus) to get acquainted with the situation at the Incukalns underground
gas storage facility, taking into account the planned maintenance work on the Valdai-Pskov-Riga gas pipeline which runs to Latvia, LETA was informed by the Ministry of Defense.
While at the facility, the minister gained confidence that there are enough gas reserves at least for this
winter season.
During the meeting, the Minister was introduced to the principles, potential and planned development projects of the Incukalns underground gas storage facility, as well as discussed further cooperation between the defense industry and Conexus in the context of joint exercises to ensure national defense.
As reported, Russian state gas company
Gazprom will carry out planned maintenance work on the Valdai-Pskov-Riga gas pipeline which runs to
Latvia, starting from Monday, the company said on Friday.
The repair works, which Gazprom said were agreed with other gas
pipeline operators, will last until February 6 and are aimed at 'increasing gas supply security'.
It did not provide other details.
