Nur-Sultan, October 26 - Neftegaz.RU. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Chevron CEO and Chairman Michael Wirth discussed the US major’s projects in the country, NewEurope reported.
“Chevron is very active in the energy market of our country as a reliable partner in the implementation of major projects in the oil and gas sector, such as Tengiz and Karachaganak. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has negatively impacted the oil and gas industry, upsetting the balance between supply and demand and lowering oil prices,” Tokayev said.
The President called the timely launch of the project to expand the production capacity of the Tengiz field by 2022 as important for Kazakhstan. He welcomed the company’s activities to implement the project, noting that a number of tasks are being completed ahead of schedule.
Tokayev expressed gratitude to TengizChevrOil for the coordinated work to prevent coronavirus infection and stabilise the epidemiological situation. He also thanked Michael Wirth for providing the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan with medical devices, drugs and protective equipment totalling $ 20 million, organising the visit of foreign doctors and financing the construction of a 200-bed infectious diseases hospital in Kulsary.
In addition, Tokayev focused on the importance of ensuring the share of local content in the implementation of projects at Tengiz. In this context, he supported the creation of a Local Content Fund for the implementation of joint investment projects.
Kazakhstan’s President also touched upon the development of the Karachaganak oil field, pointing out the need to ensure the timely implementation of this project and maintain the volume of oil production at the level of 10-11 million tonnes per year.
In turn, Wirth, fondly recalling his talks with Tokayev in 2019 in Nur-Sultan and New York, thanked him for the opportunity to meet again. “Kazakhstan is a special country for us and a very important direction in the activities of our company. Therefore, we intend to continue our interaction in the energy sector of Kazakhstan, in particular, at the Tengiz and Karachagan fields,” the Chevron CEO said.
