Comex gold crossed the point of $600 throughout Wednesday's session.
The most-active June gold settled $1.90 higher at $601.30 an ounce in New York.
The contract got as high as $604 an ounce but was unable to re-test the $608.40-an-ounce 25-year high reached on Tuesday.
