Japanese shares gained this morning on Tuesday as investors covered short positions after the Nikkei had fallen more than 440 points since two sessions ago, with a weakening yen fuelling interest in exporters and easing crude oil prices supporting general sentiment.
The Nikkei 225 Stock Average finished the session up 34.85 points or 0.3 percent at 12,968.03, off a high of 13,049.58.
The broader Topix was up 0.84 points or 0.07 percent at 1,249.09.
Gainers outnumbered decliners 857 to 736, with 122 issues unchanged.
Volume rose to 1.01 billion shares, up from 956 million shares on Monday morning.
