Prime Minister Modi pledges India will reach net zero emissions by 2070

With a population of 1.39 billion, India is the world's 3rd largest emitter of carbon dioxide after China and the United States

Prime Minister Modi pledges India will reach net zero emissions by 2070

Glasgow, November 3 - Neftegaz.RU. Speaking at the COP26 summit, India´s PM Narendra Modi announced that India will cut its climate emissions to net zero by 2070.

The country is still largely reliant on fossil fuels such as coal and oil, and its energy demand is expected to grow faster than any other country over the next few years as the economy continues to grow to meet the aspirations of 1.39 billion people for faster development.

The new goal wouldn’t see the world keep to the Paris Agreement’s aim of keeping temperature rises to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, as that requires global emissions to reach net-zero around 2050.

India, which is home to 17 % of the world's population, accounts for only about 5% of total (greenhouse gas) emissions, Modi said in Glasgow.
He announced 5 key commitments on tackling climate change:
  • by 2030 committed to a 45% reduction in the carbon intensity of the economy
  • increase its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030
  • 50 % of the country’s energy requirements will come from renewable sources by the same date
  • reduce its projected carbon emissions by 1 bln tonnes between now and 2030
  • India will achieve the target of net zero emissions by 2070
India’s 2070 date is 20 years later than the 2050 pledged by the US, UK and EU, and later than the 2060 chosen by the world’s largest polluter China, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping did not attend the COP26 conference in the Scottish city of Glasgow.
