Poland wants to stop importing Russian coal

Warsaw, March 2 - Neftegaz.RU. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said that Poland wants to stop importing Russian coal, effective immediately:
  • I talked about it today with the Prime Minister of Australia... to transport coal to Poland from there
  • Poland is ready to introduce an embargo on Russian coal at any time
  • We only need assurance from the European Commission that it will not penalise us for this step...
  • and then we will be prepared to introduce an embargo on Russian coal
Speaking to reporters in Brussels on March 1, Morawiecki said that Europe should stop buying gas and oil from Russia as soon as possible.

Despite pledges to decarbonize Europe’s economy, Poland is not retreating from coal.
In 2021, Poland's government signed an agreement with the coal mining industry to phase out coal production by 2049.

In the last 20 years, Poland has recorded one of the largest increases in fossil fuel imports among EU countries.
Within 2 decades, the import of coal to Poland increased by 756 %, oil by 41 %, and gas by 118 %.

Currently, 55 % of Poland's gas imports come from Russia.
Russia also provides 75 % of Poland's imported coal.
