China’s Sinopec aims to build its 1st green hydrogen project in 2022

China’s Sinopec aims to build its 1st green hydrogen project in 2022

Beijing, May 25 - Neftegas.RU. Sinopec is planning to launch its 1st green hydrogen project in 2022, as Asia’s largest oil refiner aims to go carbon-neutral by 2050, according to a report on Reuters.

Sinopec now has an annual hydrogen production capacity of 3.5 million tonnes.
The company is China’s largest hydrogen producer, accounting for approximately 14% of total production.

This is mainly grey hydrogen, however, which is produced as part of the refining process.
It is not considered environmentally friendly as no carbon-capture processes are in place.
Senior Sinopec executives said:
  • The company will launch the green hydrogen plant in Ordos, in Chinas’ Inner Mongolia region in 2022
  • It also plans to set up 1 000 hydrogen filling stations across the country by 2025
The green hydrogen facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 20,000 tonnes and a total investment of around $405 million.
The 1st phase will produce:
  • 10 000 tonnes of hydrogen
  • with a 270 MW solar power plant
  • 50 MW wind farm providing support
It should be no surprise that Sinopec is acutely interested in hydrogen.
China after all is the largest producer of hydrogen today with roughly 22MT of hydrogen, which is over 2x that of the US.
