Somali pirates take bulk carrier

2011, 8 may, A maritime security alert has been issued after pirates reportedly seized a Panama-registered bulk carrier in the Indian Ocean.

The MV Full City was taken with 24 crewmembers on board, around 450 nautical miles from Mumbai. The hijacking has not yet been widely reported in the press and there are very few details available on the situation.

Nonetheless, vessel operators are reminded that Somali pirates are likely to conduct attacks further out from the Somali coastline than normal at present, ahead of the Indian Ocean monsoon which is likely to begin taking effect on pirate activity from next month.
