Kola NPP

The nuclear power plant is located 12 km away from Polyarnye Zori, Murmansk Oblast in north-western Russia

Kola NPP

The Kola NPP was the 1st to be built in the harsh climatic conditions of the Arctic.

Kola NPP is the key electricity supplier of Murmansk region and the Republic of Karelia.
The plant has 4 units 440 MW each (half of the region’s power generating capacity).
The annual production capacity is over 12 billion KWh.

The existing 4 Kola units are VVER-440 reactors; 1 and 2 are V-230 models and 3 and 4 are of the V-213 type. Units 1-4 have received licence extensions to 2033, 2029, 2027 and 2029, respectively.

Meanwhile, it was announced that the Kola NPP will start producing hydrogen in 2023 after being selected as a pilot site for the creation of a bench test complex for the production and handling of hydrogen.

The Kola NPP was chosen for several reasons, the main ones being a surplus of generated energy, its low cost, as well as the availability of all the necessary infrastructure and experience in the production of hydrogen in small quantities for the plant's own needs.

Rosatom will build 2 more new power units at the Kola NPP with a capacity of 600 MW each.
The construction of the 1st block is scheduled for 2028, with commissioning to take place in 2034.
