1995-1999, deputy prosecutor general of the Russian Federation (1998-Aug. 1999, acting prosecutor general).
Aug. 1999-present, Justice Minister of the Russian Federation.
June 2006, Presidential nominee as Prosecutor General, following resignation of Vladimir Ustinov.
