Grigory Yavlinsky was born on April 10, 1962 in Lvov, Ukraine and is the son of an officer.

He is best known as the author of the 500 Days Programme, a plan for the transition of the USSR to a free-market economy.

In 1973-1976 v aspirant of Moscow Institute of People-s Economy.

In 1976-1977 v chief engineer at the All-Union Research Institute of coal industry.
1982-1984 v head of the labor department of the Research Institute of labor.

In 1984-1989 v deputy head of social issues department of the USSR State Committee on Labor and social issues.
1990 v deputy Chairman of RF Ministers Soviet, Chairman of the State Committee on economic reform.
Since 1991 v up to now v Chairman of the Center of economic and political research.
August-December, 1991 v deputy Chairman of the USSR people-s economy administration, responsible for developing and carrying out economic reforms.

Since January, 1995 v Chairman of the All-Russia public political organization "Yabloko". In March, 1999 - the movement was turned into a party.

He ran twice for Russia's presidency – in 1996, against Boris Yeltsin, finishing fourth with 7.3% of the vote; and in 2000, against Vladimir Putin, finishing third with 5.8%.
He did not run in 2004 or 2008, after his party failed to cross the 5% threshold in the 2003 Duma elections

Yavlinsky is Yabloko party's nominee for President of Russia in 2018 presidential election.

Author of over 60 books and publications.
Married, has two sons.
