He is an Academician, president of 'Rosshelf', president of the scientific center 'The Kurchatov Institute', president of the Program 'Russia - USA: XXI century', director of Council of the International thermonuclear experimental reactor prospecting. He is one of the most famous Russian scientists, specialist in the sphere of nuclear physics. State prize-winner of 1977, 1984 and 1985.
Till 1996 he had been Vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, till 1988 he was member of the Russian defense Council.
