The three Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania - have been among the loudest voices urging Europe to end its dependence on Russian gas & oil
Tallinn, April 7 - Neftegaz.RU. The Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas has said that the liquidified natural gas (
LNG) terminal in
Estonia is planned to be built until autumn 2022, Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports.
Ass said in an interview with the Vikerraadio that Estonia actually did not consume a single molecule of
Russian gas already.
As to the LNG terminal similar to that in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, the minister announced:
- The significant decision has been made by Estonia to build a pier in Paldiski in order to receive a LNG regasification ship and build the pipe connections that will allow the regasified LNG to reach Estonia’s gas network
The plan is to continue the project in the Paldiski port near Tallinn started by the Estonian fuel retailer Alexela.
Next, if Latvia and
Finland agree to take part in the project, then a joint venture would be set up.
ERR also quoted Aas as saying that the Latvian Minister of Economy Jānis Vitembergs was currently in the US seeking partners for cooperation as
Latvia hoped to find long-term solutions in addition to the planned Paldiski terminal.
Some EU countries are trying to fast-track their clean
energy transition plans or seek out alternative suppliers, but experts agree that for the bloc as a whole, a complete abandonment of Russian gas is not a probable
reality.
