India Opens LNG Market
High demand quickly silences critics...
India's first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is set to arrive from Qatar on January 29. The ship carrying the LNG will dock at the Dahej terminal in Gujarat, according to the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Mr Subir Raha.
The entire 5 million tonnes of LNG being imported has already been sold to prospective users, putting to rest the scepticism and arguments that there were not enough buyers for the fuel.
Petronet LNG Ltd, a joint venture promoted by major oil companies in the country, completed the construction of the country's first LNG import terminal at Dahej towards the end of December 2003 with a capacity of 5 million tonnes. Under 'Disha,' it has chartered two LNG tankers for shipping the crude from Qatar.
