According to Chechen oil workers, about 2,000 tonnes of oil is stolen from Chechen oil pipelines every night. About 1,500 policemen were recruited in early winter to guard the pipes that bring the republic much needed hard currency.
Since this deployment, thefts have decreased dramatically however work is very dangerous. Thiefs often place mines to thwart the patrols.
Adam Delimkhanov has been in charge of the special regiment for three months now. The results are quite impressive.
According to Mr. Delimkhanov, the patrols have been responsible for over 200 million rubles in savings.
Only six months ago Chechen motorways were lined with an endless line of tankers selling low-quality fuel. Today they are a rarity. The police say that by the end of spring illegal gas and oil stations will disappear.
