Diamond Industry Relocating to China
Scores of jobs to be lost...
About 19 leading diamond processors in the Indian diamond industry have decided to relocate their operations to China. This decision was made after the Government of Gujarat failed to meet industry demands for better infrastructure facilities and uninterrupted power supply.
Although Gujarat presently has a monopoly in the diamond industry with exports worth Rs47,000 crore per annum, the poor infrastructure, erratic electricity, inadequate security, poor port facilities and air links have prompted the sector to adopt this stance. The diamond merchants had demanded the building of a modern international airport at Surat and also dredging of Magdalla port to ship the products. But the Government has yet to implement the projects.
The relocation has resulted in about 50,000 diamond cleaners losing their job.
