Soviet Influence Lives On

Baku-Ceyhan pipeline gets a new name...

Soviet Influence Lives On

The Soviet era lives on - at least in the international oil business.

The Baku-Ceyhan pipeline (or BTC) got a name change yesterday as it secured nearly $3 billion of funding. The 1,100-mile route will be named after Haydar Aliyev, the late Azerbaijani strongman.

The reason is simple. Aliyev is still a big name in strategically important Azerbaijan. He all but ensured his son's presidency in October in the first dynastic succession of the former Soviet Union. If his son has inherited his father's political longevity, oil companies can be expecting to do business with him for the next three decades.
