Transneft Readies Alternative Asian Pipeline

Russia's oil pipeline monopoly, Transneft, may need up to nine years to build a pipeline to transfer Siberian oil to the Pacific coast.

The latest study is for a link that would be laid north of an already proposed pipeline from Angarsk to Nakhodka.

Japan has offered Russia $5 billion in loans to build a $5.8 billion pipeline to Nakhodka instead of a $2.8 billion route to China, which was backed by Yukos, Russia's second-largest oil producer.

Transneft has lobbied for the Nakhodka pipe, which faces fierce objections on environmental grounds.
