GSM Enters Iraq
Iraqi market could prove huge as lack of infrastructure continues to plague country...
The first commercial GSM network in Iraq was launched yesterday by Egyptian telecommunications group Orascom Telecom (OT).
OT won a three-year license to build and operate a mobile communications network in central Iraq. Following the success of its bid, OT selected Alcatel and Motorola as the key suppliers for the network. In October OT?s Chairman Naguib Sawiris stated the costs would exceed $100 million and that the suppliers (i.e. Alcatel and Motorola) would face the set-up costs.
OT plans to attract over 1 million subscribers within the first two years of its operations in Iraq.
