A project to enlarge the Shanghai port, a $340 million undertaking, was recently approved by the Chinese government, sources with the Ministry of Communications said here Thursday.
The fifth-phase project of the Waigaoqiao port, aiming to increase annual throughput by 8.3 million tons including 700,000 containers, will finish construction and go into operation by October 2004, according to sources.
