According to a Korean official, about 30,000 gallons of oil leaked from a US military base on the Korean penninsula. However, the aircraft fuel from Camp Humphreys did not enter areas outside the US base, he said.
The leak occurred Saturday morning from a broken pipeline about six inches in diameter. The pipeline was linked to underground oil tanks in the base.
The US military authorities launched emergency repair work on the broken pipeline and removed the leaked fuel, Korean officials said. "The oil did not leak out of the base, and we confirmed that there was no damage to farmland or streams from the leaked fuel," said a Korean official. The US military authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
