Turkish teenager refuses to marry man who raped her...
A Turkish teenage girl has opted to see her father remain behind bars rather than go along with his request to marry a man who had raped her. The 15-year-old girl who was not identified but comes from Adana in southern Turkey told her family that her 26-year-old boyfriend had raped her, according to the English language Turkish Daily News.
To defend the family honour, the girl's father demanded she marry her attacker who reportedly agreed to wed the girl in a religious ceremony. However, when the man refused a civil ceremony (the only way for the marriage to be officially recognised in Turkey) the father reported the rape to authorities.
While the attacker was handed a jail term of more than six years, the father was also sentenced to three years in prison for being made an accomplice.
But the judge agreed to free both if the girl agreed to marry.
She refused.
"I have my pride and I will not accept this offer, even if I know that it would allow my father to be freed," she said according to the newspaper. She added that she wanted to see her attacker punished.
Her father has been jailed while her attacker has fled, it added.
