Qatar's 'Artificial Island' Underway

The Qatarian Tourism Authority (QTA) has officially presented the $2.5 billion 'Pearl of the Gulf' project that envisions the construction of an artificial island off the coast of Doha's West Bay Lagoon.

The project will be carried out by Qatar's largest private shareholding company, United Development Company, with the support of the government and QTA in particular.

The first inhabitants of the new island are expected to move into their new residences in late 2006. The artificial island will accommodate some 30,000 people in 7,500 high-quality dwelling units.
