Challenge To Australian Govt

"The Australian government certainly hasn't been very positive..."

Challenge To Australian Govt

Australians clamor the government for reconsidering their policy over gas and oil production in the Timor Sea.
The Australian Parliament agreed developing Timor oil and gas resources last month.

The Timor Sea Justice Campaign says there are no permanent maritime boundaries between Australia and East Timor, and Australia is currently taking 72 percent of the money from the Timor Sea Gas and Oil reserves.
Dan Nicholson, the campaign spokesman, said that over the next 30 years Australia will get more than $10 billion from operations in fields which are closer to East Timor than Australia.

The Timor Sea Justice Campaign hopes to change the government's mind ahead of talks between Australia and East Timor in Dili on April, 19.

'The Australian government certainly hasn't been very positive, but now we're seeing increasing awareness in the community and statements from other political parties about this issue, so we know it's going to be a long road, but I think if people in the Australian community knew what the Australian government was doing, they'd be angry about that. So, we're confident that as we get the message out to the community, pressure, real pressure, will be brought to bear on the government to change their policy.'
