British Prime Minister Tony Blair claimed a "thorough" investigation of allegations of corrupt practices in the United Nations oil-for-food program in pre-war Iraq.
He said the UN had already ordered an investigation. "That is important. It is right these are investigated thoroughly."
There were the rumors that Saddam Hussein splashed out billions of pounds from the 60 billion-program to reward powerful friends including senior UN officials, Russian and French politicians and a prominent British MP.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister was challenged on the credibility of the UN to oversee a handover of power in Iraq. Mr Blair said that whatever the "historical" difficulties about the UN's role in Iraq, it had the international legitimacy to be able to certify and help guide the process of political transition.
"This is an extraordinarily crucial moment in Iraq's development. That is why so much fighting and terrorism is going on to stop us," he said.
