According to Colonel Mahmoud Ahmed, a bomb struck a section of a pipeline about 15 kilometres south of Samarra, which is almost 100 km north of Baghdad.
Oil supply to the pipeline has been stopped to enable the fire to be extinguished. Insurgents bent on derailing Iraqi reconstruction efforts regularly attack the country's oil infrastructure.
