Russia WTO Talks Almost Finished

Russia hopes to round off negotiations on accession to the World Trade Organization by the end of 2005 and says that it sees no major obstacles in the process, Maxim Medvedkov, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade?s department of trade talks head, told the Itar-Tass news agency on Tuesday.

Russia is discussing WTO accession with 54 WTO members and has completed talks and signed protocols with 36 countries, Medvedkov said.

Medvedkov pointed put, that the negotiations with the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Australia go with difficulties.

Differences remain with Brazil, Argentina and Australia on agriculture, including meat and sugar import quotas. The three countries call for a considerable decrease in import quotas and transfer to the earlier supply quotas system.

With the United States, aircraft tariffs and financial services remain unsolved issues in the talks, Medvedkov said.
