Kazakhstan Launched Pipeline To China, Bypassing Russia

Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbaev inaugurated Thursday a major energy project that will allow the country to export crude oil directly to China bypassing Russian territory.

The 1,800-mile Atasu-Alashankou pipeline is
the first export pipeline to the east, according to Uzakbai Karabalin, the president of state oil company KazMunaiGaz. ?We mark this event as the transition to a new stage in relations between Kazakhstan and China in the oil and gas industry,? Karabalin was quoted by RIA Novosti.

According to Karabalin, the pipeline, which starts in Western Kazakhstan, will have a capacity of 10 million metric tons a year, although some estimates have put the figure at double that. He also said that it could carry Russian oil from Western Siberia, which would be a bonus for Russia considering that its own mooted pipeline to China remains on the drawing board.
