Ukraine Took European Gas Because of Cold Weather

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom?s export chief Alexander Medvedev said Ukraine should stop consuming gas above levels agreed with Russia earlier this year.

Italy said imports from Russia slid 5.4 percent in a 24-hour period that ended on Wednesday morning. Gazprom reduced exports to Hungary by 20 percent on Wednesday, said Sandor Kantor, a spokesman for the energy company Mol in Budapest.

Gazprom said it was still shipping seven percent more gas to Europe than it was obliged to send.

Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy said last week it was forced to tap more Russian gas from pipelines across its territory due to cold weather. It pledged to take less gas in next month.
