Transneft Attacked By Environmentalists
Sixteen young people were detained by police during the clashes
Several green youth organizations, Ya Dumayu, Groza, Ekozashchita and other staged an unauthorized picket near the office of Russian oil shipment company Transneft, Moscow April 1, to protest against construction of the Eastern Siberia-the Pacific Ocean gas pipeline.
Sixteen young people were detained by police during the clashes; they vowed to go to law against the Central District?s authorities in return.
In mid.-2005, Russia?s oil shipment monopoly, Transneft, unveiled the project of constructing a 5,000km oil pipeline from Eastern Siberia to the Pacific Ocean. Nearly a half of the pipeline would run through a seismic area and just a kilometer from the Lake Baikal. An earthquake will pollute the eco-system, ecologists warn, pointing out the pipeline will destroy the Baikal.
