Norwegian oil and gas majors Statoil and Hydro will participate in the development of the giant Shtokman gas field in the Russia's territory of the Barents Sea, according to the Russian analyst Dmitry Loukashov.
Loukashov claims that the Norwegian companies have been given priority because they have the most experience in offshore development in Arctic waters.
"They have also been the keenest participants in the whole process", he said to Norway's financial newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv.
Statoil, Hydro, ConocoPhillips, Chevron and Total are all in the race to compete for development contracts and shares in the Shtokman Field.
The natural gas giant Gazprom is expected to retain a little more than a 50 per cent share in the field.
Gazprom's information director said a that the final decision on the project participants has been postponed until the end of April.
