US Launched Probe Into Russian Gas Shipper

Following the probe of Russia?s and Ukrainian authorities into activities of Swiss RosUkrEnergo, the U.S. Department of Justice has apparently focused on that company, which is the sole shipper of gas to Ukraine. The subject of investigation is the actual owner of the 50 percent in the Swiss company, Kommersant reported.

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a probe into RosUkrEnergo AG (RUE), which is 50:50 owned by Russia?s Gazprom and Raiffeisen Investment, a division of Austrian Raiffeisen Bank AG, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported. The subject of investigation is the actual co-holder of the 50 percent in the company nominally owned by Raiffeisen Investment.

Under the contract of Naftogaz Ukrainy and Gazprom, RUE is the sole shipper of Russia?s and Middle Asia?s gas to Ukraine (around 50 bcm) worth $7.5 billion on year.

According to Gazprom, RUE derived 83.36 billion rubles in revenues in the first nine months of 2005; the net profit stood at 14.269 billion ($509 million), of which Gazprom received a half as the owner of 50 percent in the company. The actual owner of the remaining 50 percent in RUE is still a secret at least for deputies of Russia?s State Duma and the Supreme Rada of Ukraine and, perhaps, even for enforcement services of these countries.
