Syria Wants Iraq to Repair Oil Export Pipeline

Iraq is considering reopening an oil export pipeline to Syria that was badly damaged by U.S. bombs in 2003, Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani told Reuters.

He added he was planning a "big shake-up at state oil firms", including the State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO), in a bid to stamp out corruption.

Syria favored reopening pipeline of the 200,000 bpd capacity that links Iraq with the Banias export terminal on Syria's Mediterranean coast.

Iraqi oil minister demanded assurances from Syria that it would safeguard the link

"I have asked a technical committee to check the pipeline from the Iraqi side. The study will take two or three weeks. After that we need to take a decision to repair the pipeline and this needs agreement with Syria so it does not get attacked."
