Oil giant BP has increased production in its troubled Alaskan oil fields at Prudhoe Bay and the group is optimistic that full production can return before the replacement of the field's corroded oil pipes next year.
The group said yesterday that production at Prudhoe Bay stood at 250,000 barrels per day on Friday, up 30,000 barrels a day during the week.
In August BP halted production from the eastern side of the field to prevent a possible oil spill after the discovery of unexpected corrosion in an oil line. Earlier in the year, about 5,000 barrels leaked from a similar pipeline on the western side of the field.
As a result, production fell to about 200,000 barrels a day, or about half the normal amount.
