Adelaide University is testing a hybrid gas rig to be set up in Kingston.
Local coal will be converted by gasification to diesel which will have the capacity to supply 30 per cent of South Australia's diesel needs.
Hybrid Enegy's managing director, Barry Ford, says 150 to 200 jobs will result when the testing process is finished and the plant is built in 2015.
