Saakashvili Calls Security Council To Decide On Abkhazia

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili called Monday the Security Council to canvass actions to be taken by the country’s leadership to sort out the crisis in Abkhazia, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the president’s news service.

The units of Russia’s railway forces entered Abkhazia’s territory Saturday, May 31. The soldiers will restore Abkhazia’s roads under the RF president’s ruling on rendering humanitarian aid to the republic. The RF Defense Ministry had made a notifying statement, but Georgia viewed this action as an act of Russia’s aggression.

Georgia is scrutinizing all actions in the arsenal to prevent Russia’s occupation in the Georgian region of Abkhazia, Georgia’s State Minister for Re-Integration Temur Yakobashvili announced. Georgia sees clear signs of occupation in Russia’s actions in Abkhazia and won’t confine to mere statements or resolutions, the minister made clear.

Part of Georgia’s Republic in time of the Soviet Union, Abkhazia declared independence straight after the collapse of the USSR. The military conflict that stripped Georgia of control over Abkhazia ended August 30, 1993 and Abkhazia has been seeking the recognition ever since.
