On Monday, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg began a five-day visit to South America promoting the Norwegian oil industry and international cooperation on climate protection. The Prime Minister’s itinerary includes Brasilia, the Amazon and Santiago de Chile.
The visit began in Brazil, where Stoltenberg met the leaders of Brazil's state oil company Petrobras, together with StatoilHydro CEO Helge Lund. He will also open an oil-related exhibition in Rio. He will be joined by Erik Solheim, Norwegian Minister of the environment to be received by President Lula da Silva, and will then announce Norwegian financial support for the protection of the Amazonas rain forest.
The visit also includes traveling on the Amazonas, to inspect the rainforest and meet with local leaders and meeting with President Michelle Bachelet in Santiago, Chile.
Norwegian oil and gas industry have made major investments in the Brazilian oil and gas industry.
Stoltenberg said the visit “reflects the increasingly close ties between our countries. The Government is interested in facilitating close cooperation between Norway and both Brazil and Chile in the private sector and the energy field as well as in the international arena. In particular, climate change and the fight against poverty are important themes in our international cooperation”.
