Kremlin: Hungary could join North Stream and Turkish Stream

In the near future, Hungary could join the projects of Gazprom North stream and Turkish Stream, announced on Februar 1, 2017, Yuri Ushakov, aide to Russia’s President on the eve of Putin’s visit to Budapest.

Putin's visit - his 2nd to Budapest in 2 years and his 3rd official meeting with Orban in that time - is primarily to discuss economic issues, including the controversial Paks nuclear-power plant that Russia is contracted to build and further agreements on natural-gas purchases.

Analysts see the visit as an opportunity for Putin to encourage Hungary in its efforts to get the EU sanctions against Russia lifted.

Putin's trip to Budapest is not important because of any breaking news or images on TV, but because it might give another long-term signal of changing loyalties and a backtracking on devotion to the European project.

«I would like to point out the fair prospects for strengthening cooperation between Russia and Hungary in the oil-gas sphere: deliveries from Russia account for 75% of Hungarian consumption of oil and 60% of gas consumption. It is not improbable for our Hungarian partners to manage to join in the new routes developed by Gazprom for the delivery of energy supplies like North Stream and Turkish Stream. The issue of a link from Turkish Stream to Hungary is being discussed now.»

Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive in Budapest at around midday on Februar 2, 2017.

According to Ushakov, the 2 politicians will also talk about restoring the relations between the EU and Russia.

«Hungarians are playing a sufficiently positive role in this aspect,» underlined Ushakov.
