EU and Kazakhstan discussed international energy cooperation

European Comission reported on July 26, 2017, that energy experts from the EU and Kazakhstan met on Tuesday in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Their discussions focused on developments in international energy markets, the development of energy transportation routes, including those in the Caspian Sea, energy security and diversification of supplies.

Also on the agenda were the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency as well as cooperation between the EU and Kazakhstan in the energy sector.

The meeting took place under the MoU on Energy Cooperation signed between the EU and Kazakhstan in 2006.

It was chaired by Gerassimos Thomas, the European Commission's Deputy Gen.Director for Energy and Magzum Mirzagaliyev, Vice-Minister of Oil and Gas of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan's oil fields are being developed in close cooperation with European and international oil and gas companies, and it is one of the major oil suppliers to the EU, providing nearly 6% of EU oil imports.

The EU plans to extend this cooperation to other energy sectors, including renewables and energy efficiency.

In this context, Kazakhstan's role as a potential regional leader in sustainable energy and green economy development will also be a focus of this meeting.

The next meeting under the MoU is planned to be held in 2018 in Brussels.
