Speaking at the commissioning ceremony Vladimir Putin said its annual capacity of 2.7 billion metric tons of LNG reduces to zero Kaliningrad’s dependence on transit gas supplies via Belarus and Lithuania.

«Already today, the Kaliningrad region is completely autonomous and can solve all problems in the field of energy and consumption of not only the primary source, but also electricity. This unique UGS facility will ensure reliable and stable gas supplies to consumers in the region, primarily in the autumn-winter period,» Putin noted.

This LNG import terminal will bolster the region’s energy security and make it self-sufficient with natural gas if need be. The region of Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave squeezed in between Poland and Lithuania and without a land or maritime border with Russia, has been receiving natural gas supplies via the Minsk – Vilnius – Kaunas – Kaliningrad transit gas pipeline.

In the future, the tanker Marshal Vasilevsky LNG to deliver via sea. The gas will then be fed into the pipeline system of Kaliningrad via a pontoon 5 km off the coast of the Baltic Sea. So far, the area has been supplied by a gas pipeline through Belarus and Lithuania is running.
