A Shell-chartered oil tanker loaded with 84,000 tons of crude is sitting off the coast of Sydney with a cracked hull and leaking oil.
Although not yet an emergency situation, the Environment Protection Authority claimed yesterday that if the crack opened up, it could pose a potential environmental threat.
The ship, the Cypriot-flagged registered Eurydice, has been banned from entering NSW waters and is quarantined more than 30kms off the city until authorities are assured the crack has been fixed or the bilge compartment the oil was leaking from has been pumped out.
The tanker's owner was taking action to stop the leak, including removing crude oil from the affected storage tank and applying a water seal.
