Thirty eight people have been arrested aboard two ships carrying over 10,000 tonnes of stolen Nigerian crude oil, according to reports.
The suspects were handed over to the police yesterday at the NNS Becroft Naval Base, Apapa, Lagos. This brings to 60, the number of suspects arrested over stolen Nigerian crude between November 2003 and March 2004. The number includes 18 Russians, two Georgians and two Romanians arrested in November with 11,000 metric tonnes of stolen crude. They were also later handed over to the police.

Addressing journalists, the flag officer commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Adm Anthonio Ibinabo Bob-Manuel, said the Nigerian navy had done its part by arresting the illegal oil dealers on the high seas, "now we have to hand them over to the appropriate agency - the police - for prosecution."
