European oil stocks including British Petroleum Plc and Austrian oil and gas company OMV AG advanced as the crude oil price started soar.
The Dow Jones Stoxx 50 Index rose 0.1 percent to 2718.41 as of 2:55 p.m. in London. The Stoxx 600 advanced 0.1 percent, with the energy group rising the most of the 18 industries it tracks. The Euro Stoxx 50, a benchmark for the 12 countries sharing the euro, lost 0.2 percent.
BP, Europe's largest oil company, increased 0.6 percent to 491.75 pence and OMV, Austria's biggest, gained 2 percent to 147.95 euros.
Benchmark indexes fell in 11 of the 17 Western European markets. Germany's DAX Index dropped 0.2 percent. France's CAC 40 Index shed 0.2 percent. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 Index increased 0.2 percent. June futures on the Euro Stoxx 50 lost 0.4 percent.
